4.0 out of 5 stars compared LG 9000 btu and 7000 btu portable air conditioners, May 29, 2011
This review is from: LG LP0910WNR 9000BTU Portable Air Conditioner (Misc.)
I have a very large house and cannot use window units. I do have central air but live in a humid climate (and I do like to have my windows open as much as possible). So to assist the efficiency of my central ac or to use when my central ac is not really needed , I have purchased portable ac untis.

Three years ago I purchased the 10k btu whirlpool portable ac (which is very quiet and very cold air but the venting hose construction is terrible). I decided to purchase an additional unit this year. To test, I purchased the LG 7000 and 9000 portable acs to evaluate which would work best in my home and to see if I could use less btus & also save a few $$.

Don't bother with the 7000 btu unit -- it only produces warm air. This unit is being returned. The LG 9000 btu does produce very cold air, and works well in the room size designated. However, it is LOUD! Compared to the whirlpool , the venting hosing construction is much better -- but the noise really is significant... Read more

I have no windows that can use a window A/C unit. I bought 2 of these when my central A/C was broken. This unit cools a 400 sq foot room as advertised. It is easy to install. It is, however, very loud on the high fan setting. One of the units kept turning off, this happens when the water tray at the bottom fills up. The only difference in the installation was that the vent hose was fully extended on the one that was turning off. I moved it closer to the window and collapsed the length of the hose and it stopped condensing as much water and stopped shutting off. When you do need to empty the water it is quite awkward, you have to unscrew the cap at the bottom and then remove the rubber plug (the plug part isn't described in the manual, at first I wondered why no water was coming out after I unscrewed the cap). The plug is close to the ground so if you can't move the whole unit outdoors to empty on the ground you need to find a large low pan to collect the water. Tipping the... Read more

I bought this to supplement my central ac unit. I live in south Georgia where summer temps reach 105+ with 100% humidity. My central AC unit can only get my house down to 78 to 82 in some areas of my home when it is 105 outside. I first bought the 9,000 BTU LG portable unit to cool my living room. I will say the window vent assembly is a bit on the cheap side. You will want to purchase some rolls of sticky insulation to help better insulate the total package. Also Pro Tip: get some white duct tape to water proof the outside areas of the venting assembly. Don't forget to buy a wood rod to secure your window from burglary. Okay on to the meat and potatos. Since I purchased the unit from my local Home Depot I did not have to set the unit up right for twenty four hours to allow the coolant to settle. If you got it shipped set the unit up right for at least 24 hours before using to let the coolant settle. I got this unit out the door for $269 plus tax. Pro Tip: go to you local post... Read more
